What I played at the Manic Street Preachers gig, Southampton Guildhall, 2nd June 2015

Third time around, I almost completely scrapped the stuff I’d played at the previous two Holy Bible gigs (only a handful of songs survive), stopped trying to be clever with it, and went for the jugular by playing popular tunes from my various club nights (Stay Beautiful, Spellbound). Partly to avoid boringness for my own sake, but also because I was very aware that the hardcore fan contingent at the barrier were going to all the gigs and I didn’t want it to get repetitive for them.

DJ set – Desert Island Mix, Brighton 03/04/2015

Another day, another DJ set. Here’s what I played at DESERT ISLAND MIX at The Bee’s Mouth, where there was no theme other than the very best-of-the-best, in whatever genre. (But inevitably I played stuff that I was ‘feeling’ on the day, and/or stuff that I thought might please a crowd of Good Friday drinkers.) Two sets of 20 mins each. And I must remember the “Uptown Top Ranking”/ “Let The Music Play” “Kiss” 1-2-3, cos it got everyone up and sent them nuts. Anyway, here it is, BAM…

FIRST SET 10.00pm-10.20pm

David Bowie – Speed Of Life

The Specials – Do The Dog

Martha Reeves & The Vandellas – (Love Is Like A) Heatwave

Public Enemy – Bring The Noise

SECOND SET 11.40pm-0.00am

Laibach DJ set, 30/03/2015

It was nothing but wonderful to reacquaint myself with LAIBACH after a gap of 20+ years last night. Their new stuff sounds like Propaganda (which is never a bad thing), and the old stuff (esp. “Tanz Mit Laibach” and the Queen one) was phenomenal. And I liked the way they made Dylan’s “Ballad Of A Thin Man” sound like a Bond theme, and the pre-recorded “No Sieg-Heiling Please” before the Iron Sky one. Anyway, HERE’S WHAT I PLAYED in my DJ set of Industrial Standards, Homo-erotic EBM, Orchestral Goth and Holocaust Rock.

Beforehand, the band’s manager explained to me that they’d want a break of 15 or 20 minutes of their own pre-recorded background music between me and Laibach, depending on what sort of stuff I was gonna play. So I told him what I was gonna play, and he said “OK, 20 minutes, then”, which made me laugh. (I wasn’t offended. They must get Industrial’s Greatest Hits everywhere they go, and I can see why they’d want to cleanse the palate of Ministry an’ that, to ease us into Laibach-world.) My favourite bit was when I played the Slovenian national anthem and the Laibach crew shouted “Yeah! Come on!”. Oh and when I played some Rammstein and the Laibach manager came over and said “Is this us?” (Ouch.)

Slovenian national anthem – Zdravljica

Rammstein – Ohne Dich (Mina Harker’s Version – remix by Laibach)

Manic Street Preachers – The Intense Humming Of Evil

Bauhaus – Double Dare

Cranes – Inescapable

Siouxsie And The Banshees – Overground

Marilyn Manson – mOBSCENE (Rammstein remix)

Cop Shoot Cop – $10 Bill

Killing Joke – Follow The Leaders

D.A.F. – Der Mussolini

The Young Gods – Longue Route (Remix)

Einsturzende Neubauten – Yu Gung (Futter Mein Ego) (Adrian Sherwood remix)

Sheep On Drugs – Track X

Nitzer Ebb – Let Your Body Learn

Nine Inch Nails – March Of The Pigs

Ministry – N.W.O.

The Sisters Of Mercy – Vision Thing

…and I had plenty more where that came from. Apologies to the two people who asked for Skinny Puppy. I don’t know why I didn’t bring any with me. Total brainwrong.
